MYRTLE BEACH, N.C. – A strong second round helped Rhode Island move into a tie for eighth place at the 18-team Surf Club Invitational Monday evening.
Bryson Richards had a strong day, finishing 5-under par for the first two rounds. Richards finished the day tied for fourth place in the field of 110 golfers, just three strokes off the pace set by Connecticut's Ray Dennehy.
UConn leads the 18-team field by eight strokes, as the Huskies were minus-six in the opening round and minus-10 in the second round. Radford (-8), host Appalachian State (-3) and Butler (-2) rounded out the top four.
In addition to Richards, Rhode Island got strong play from
Tony Liu, who finished the day tied for eighth place. He was even par in the first round and followed that with a three-under 68. Fellow Freshman
Josiah Tong was tied for 40th with a plus-3 145 for the two rounds. Senior
Geronimo Narizzano was Rhody's fourth scorer with s 151 after two rounds, putting him in a tie for 83rd.
Rhode Island will head into the final round on Tuesday just five strokes off the teams in fifth place, Queens University of Charlotte and Delaware.
Head Coach Gregg Burke Said...
"The top three played as we hoped. This team has worked extremely hard since coming back from winter break. Bryson has put himself in contention even though his wedge play was spotty at times. Tony was terrific, especially his second-round clean card.
"I was especially proud of Josiah, who used a five-over first round as fuel to a two-under second round. That is great golf but more importantly it is pride and determination. Geronimo showed some toughness both rounds but dug himself in a hole more than once that was tough to get out of.
"We had the third best round in the afternoon which shows where we should rank. Tomorrow is another chance to move up and show people who we are."
