URBANA, Md. –
Geronimo Narizzano fired a 2-under par to top the 78-player field in the opening round of the Carpetbagger Classic Satuday.
With the senior Narizzano leading the way, Rhode Island holds a six-stroke advantage over second-place Robert Morris heading into Sunday's final round. Narizzano – who carded four birdies – was one of just four four players to hit under par for the day. He holds a one-stroke lead over Colgate's Robbie Herzig, Devin Smith of Mount Saint Mary's and Rider's Connor Bekefi.
Freshman
Tony Liu shot an even par on the par-72 Worthington Manor Golf Club course to end the day tied for fifth place. Graduate student
Bryson Richards struggled with six bogeys, but he came up with an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole to help get to plus-3 and position himself in 16th place overall.
Freshman
Josiah Tong had an up-and-down down, with two double-bogeys along with three bogeys and three birdies. He goes into the final round tied for 24th place at 4-over par. Sophomore
Aidan O'Donovan is one stroke behind Tong in a tie for 27th place.
Behind Rhode Island (293) and Robert Morris (299) in the the team standings are Bryant (303), Binghamton (304) and Mount Saint Mary's (304). The Rams will look to close out their third straight team title at the Carpetbagger on Sunday.
Head Coach Gregg Burke Said...
"We certainly didn't score the way we wanted to but we have tomorrow to get a little more focus. I expect every player to have a better score in round two.
Â
"Geronimo played a wonderful round of golf. He let a few shots get away from him, but he was terrific as a ball striker and course manager. Him leading the tournament is of no surprise to us as he came back to school with the sole purpose of establishing his legacy. He is a very proud young man and his grit and will have turned his game around. He may be our toughest player right now.
Â
"Tony was solid but going 3-over on the par threes is just unacceptable for a player of his unique ability. I expect big things from him every time out.
Â
"Bryson did not score well, but I believe he will play tomorrow with a positive attitude and go red. He wants to play at the next level so the only way to survive is to clear your head and go back to the process that got you to where he is as a player.
Â
"Josiah really struggled with his ball striking today but even with that, he got all the way back to 1-over. He will not leave one stone unturned in trying to post a better score tomorrow.
Â
"Aidan knows he has to play better. He has tremendous physical talent. His best days are ahead of him."
