Rams Tie for First at Carpetbagger

Team Standings
Individual Leaderboard

URBANA, Md. – Mount St. Mary's came back from 11 strokes behind to tie Rhode Island atop the team leaderboard at the Carbetbagger Classic Sunday afternoon. While the teams tied for first place, Mount St. Mary's won the tiebreaker..

Rhody began the day with a six-stroke lead over second-place Robert Morris. Mount St. Mary's was in a tie for fourth place. However, Mount St. Mary's made up 15 strokes in the first seven holes to storm by the field.

The Rams managed to tie Mount St. Mary's in the team standings thanks to strong finishes from Bryson Richards, Tony Liu and Josiah Tong. However, Mount St. Mary's took the team title on a tiebreaker.

Richards and Liu finished tied for third place on the individual leaderboard. Both finished the tournament 1-over par. Richards birdied holes 13, 15, 16 and 18 to close strong.

Tong tied for 22nd overall with an 8-over for the tournament, one stroke ahead of Geronimo Narizzano, who finished tied for 28th.

Rhode Island is off until the Cutter Creek Classic, which will be held from March 29-31 in Snow Hill, N.C.

Head Coach Gregg Burke Said...
"Other than Bryson and Tony we did not play very well at all in the tournament.

"Today we lost 15 shots to Mount St. Mary's in the first six or seven holes and were eight back. Over the next five or six we got it to two, and we knew we had to dig in for the final seven holes. In that span, Bryson was 5-under, Tony was even and Josiah 2-over so we got some great play from them. But in the end we just failed to finish it off.

"We had said earlier that we lack the toughness that has been our hallmark, but we have time to correct that.

"For the two tournaments this week, Bryson was 6-under and Tony was 5-under. Bryson finished third in both and Tony finished fourth in the first and third in the second so we are very strong at the top. Josiah has proven to be a solid three for us and Geronimo showed just how good he can be as well.

"We have some time off before Cutter Creek, which is a much tougher golf course and much tougher field than this one. Both Seb Carlsson and Owen Rooney certainly have earned a chance to travel so we'll take a hard look at who we will bring.

"This was just one tournament of our six so we have plenty of time to define ourselves before the Atlantic 10 Championship."
