Day One Results
HAMPDEN, Mass. - Freshman
Tyler Bruneau led Rhode Island Golf in the first round of the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse on Sunday afternoon. His effort helped the Rams finish the day tied with Connecticut for first in the team standings.
The Rams were as low as ninth place and as many as 15 back with eight holes to play but came roaring back to tie the Huskies for the lead at one-under.
Bruneau, who finished five under par and was the top individual of the day, was joined in the top 10 by graduate student
Sean Magarian. Magarian was one-under to come in a four-way tie for eighth.
Freshman
Luke Stennett shot two over par to tie for 23rd. He had three birdies, two of which came on the front nine. The Rams were also represented by sophomore
Tony Liu (+3, T-36) and junior
Aidan O'Donovan (+5, T-50). O'Donovan had a pair of birds on the first and 14th holes.
Rhode Island will begin the second round starting at 10:10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 30. The Rams will be grouped with players from third-place Fairfield and Connecticut.
Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said…
"We had a little bit of a letdown last week after the tournament win, but we got it back. The message all week was that we were there to play the course and not the other teams. We made it clear that we will do what we do, and they will do what they do.
"Tyler continued his solid play but it is just one round. Sixty seven was an incredible score but he needs to back it up to contend against a very strong field and a UConn team of 12 playing on its home course.
"We say it every week- Sean was Sean. He takes advantage of the golf course when he can and he respects it when he can't. Luke made one bad swing all day and it cost him two shots. But the three newcomers all scored and combined for four-under.
"Neither Tony nor Aidan shot well today, but I am not concerned with their play going forward. I fully expect them both to be in red numbers tomorrow.
"Being in the lead after 18 holes in a 54-hole tournament with this field means very little. We finished strong because we pay the price in the weight room. We need to tap into that for the next two rounds. There are several talented teams that did not play well today and they will certainly put up a fight tomorrow."
