Day Two Results
HAMPDEN, Mass. - Rhode Island Golf was second in the team standings at the end of the second round of the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse.
Following Monday's play, the Rams were behind first-place Connecticut and ahead of third-place Villanova with a score of +5. The Huskies were +2, while the Wildcats finished +6. Â
Rhody was once again led by freshman
Tyler Bruneau, who dropped back a spot after a first-place performance on day one. He finished the day tied for second with Matthew Zerfass (Villanova) at four-under. After a few bogies on the front nine, he birdied twice on the back half to recover.Â
Freshman
Luke Stennett recorded a team-best five birdies on the day, coming in at +2. He improved from 23rd overall to 15th with his effort.
Both junior
Aidan O'Donovan and graduate student
Sean Magarian finished in a tie for 28th at +5, while sophomore
Tony Liu (+8) was further back in a tie for 43rd.Â
Rhody will conclude play at the UConn Invitational beginning at 10:10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The Rams will play with host Connecticut and Villanova in the third and final round.Â
Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said…
"Not the day we expected and clearly not the day we hoped for but if you look at the round, we had to take two bogies and a double on 18 so those four strokes kept us from the lead.
"Luke is a shot out of the lead and yet he's 15th. It's good to have freshmen do things like that because it gives them experience near the top of the leaderboard.Â
"The guy I was most proud of today was Aidan. For the second tournament in a row, he followed a difficult first round with stellar play in the second round. He has become a strong three for us and I love his upside.
"Sean just had a bad putting day. He needs the putter to work to score well. Tony isn't playing like himself yet … He knows he has to score better.
"We are in the final group for the final round, which we always strive for. Villanova is very good and had a great day today. Boston College will very much be in the mix tomorrow as well. But at the end of the day, it comes down to what we talked about all week- we just have to play the golf course."
