Agyemang Called Up To January Camp for Team USA

KINGSTON, R.I. – Former Rhode Island men's soccer star Patrick Agyemang is one of 24 players who have been called to the United States Men's National Team January training camp.

First-year head coach Mauricio Pochettino has seven first-time invitees to the January camp, including Agyemang. Pochettino – who took over as the Team USA coach in September of 2024, begins his first January camp with the national team in Ft. Lauderdale Tuesday. Team USA opens its 2025 schedule with a friendly against Venezuela on Jan. 18 in Ft. Lauderdale. That match will air on TNT/Telemundo/Universo/Max/Peacock at 3 p.m.

Team USA plays a second friendly as part of the January camp when it plays Costa Rica in Orlando on Jan. 22. That 7 p.m. match will air live on TNT/TruTV/Universo/Max/Peacock.

The January camp is often a springboard for players to earn a spot on the World Cup roster. Since 1999, 30 players who either made their debut or second Team USA appearance during the January camp went on to make a FIFA World Cup roster.

This year's camp is a significant evaluation period for the 2026 World Cup, which will be played in the United States, Mexico and Canada. It marks the first time the event will be played on American soil since 1994.

Agyemang scored 19 goals and had 12 assists over 37 career matches for Rhode Island from 2020-22. He became the highest Major League Soccer draft pick in Rhode Island history when he was selected 12th overall by Charlotte FC in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft. He has since become one of the brightest stars in MLS, recording 11 goals and five assists in 43 matches over his first two professional seasons.

One of seven forwards called up for the camp, Agyemang is one of 10 players total hoping to earn their cap with Team USA.

In addition to the January camp, Team USA also has the Concacaf Nations League Finals and the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup as its final showcase opportunities for players hoping to earn a World Cup roster spot.

Agyemang is trying to become the first Rhode Island player since Geoff Cameron to play for Team USA. Cameron first trained with Team USA in 2009 and made 55 appearances with the national team from 2010-17. He was a starter for the 2014 World Cup roster that reached the Round of 16.
