KINGSTON, R.I. –
Nikki Fernando and
Klara Nelander both won in singles and doubles action to led Rhode Island to its season-best fifth consecutive victory Sunday. The Rams (13-2, 2-0 Atlantic 10) knocked off George Mason, 4-0.
Fernando and
Katharina Spieth teamed up for a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, while it was Nelander and
Sophie Herrman recording a 6-3 win at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point for Rhody. URI's team of
Grace Darcy and
Anastasia Pettersson also led 5-2 at No. 2 doubles when play was halted.
"It was another good doubles point today that set the tone for the match," Rhode Island head coach
Jonas Brobeck said. "We had some dips at a couple of our singles spots, but we stayed mentally tough and found a way. Overall, it was a great weekend with two A-10 wins. We are looking forward to playing at home the next couple of weekends."
Nelander dropped just one game in her 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles. Fernando finished next, recording a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles to get Rhody within a point of the team win. Pettersson did the honors, beating Noelle Talarek 6-3, 6-4 to notch her team-leading 17th singles win of the season.
Rhode Island returns home to host Davidson at the URI Tennis Complex on Saturday, March 29. The match begins at 1 p.m.
