WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Led by the play of freshman
Tyler Bruneau, Rhode Island is in third place through two rounds at the Golden Horseshoe Invitational.
Hosted by William & Mary, the 13-team field was topped by Longwood, the lone team to be under par on the day. The Lancers were minus-4 in the opening round, which helped them build a nine-stroke lead over the rest of the field heading into Tuesday's final round.
Rhode Island was consistent on the day, shooting plus-4 in the first round and plus-5 later in the day. Bruneau led the way, as he was minus-1 in both rounds and in fourth place in the 86-player field. The trio of Navy's Chip Deegan, Longwood's Justin LaRue and Georgetown's Carsten Judge are tied atop the leader board at minus-6.
Bruneau carded an eagle and two birdies in the first round. In the second round, he had four birdies. He was spectacular on the 435-yard par-4 17th hole, recording a birdie in both rounds.
Sophomore
Josiah Tong is in a four-way tie for 14th place at two-over par. He had five birdies and one eagle to keep himself within striking distance of the top of the field. Tong had significant success on the par-5, 498-yard second hole, carding an eagle and a birdie in the two rounds.
"It would be easy to say that I am proud of Tyler and Josiah," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "Tyler grinded all day and never gave into bad scores. Josiah came here with the attitude that he wanted to own the fourth spot going forward.
"We got some indifferent play and some good play from everyone else, but Indifferent play doesn't win tournaments. We came here to win the tournament."
Freshman
Luke Stennett is just two strokes behind Tong in a tie for 23rd place. Stennett was two-over in both rounds and had eight birdies. The fourth scorer for the Rams was graduate student
Sean Magarian, who is plus-8 heading into the final round. He trimmed four strokes off his first-round score.
Junior
Aidan O'Donovan is plus-10, while sophomore
Tony Liu is plus-6. Liu is entered in the field as an individual.
Host William & Mary is in second place, one stroke ahead of Rhode Island with a team score of plus-8. Round out the top five are Drexel (plus-11) and Villanova and Navy, which are tied at plus-13.
Teams will play 18 holes on Tuesday, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
