Rams Placed Third at Golden Horseshoe

Final Results

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.
– Freshman Luke Stennett made a hard charge up the individual leaderboard in the final round of the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate to lead Rhode Island to a third-place team finish Tuesday.

Rhode Island finished third in the team standings with a plus-12 score. Longwood won the team title with a plus-4, while Drexel – where Rhode Island will compete at the Dragon Match Play Invitational April 7-8 – was one stroke ahead of URI at plus-11. Host William & Mary was one stroke behind the Rams in third place.

Midway through the final round, Rhode Island had pulled even with Longwood atop the standings, but URI couldn't maintain pace.

"We felt coming into today that we needed at least six-under to win," Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said. "When we got to eight-under, we led the golf tournament. Two holes later from just two of our players, we gave back nine shots, and a little while later we gave back three more.

"In the fall you try to find out who you are as a team. In the spring you try to find out which individuals will step up to help us compete in the Atlantic 10 Championship. Clearly we are a long way from even considering that."

Stennett tied for the second-lowest score on the day, shooting a 3-under par 68. With five birdies and one eagle in the final round, he shot 13 spots up the board on the final day, finishing in a tie for 10th place overall.

Fellow freshman Tyler Bruneau was URI's top finisher, placing fifth in the field of 86. Bruneau finished minus-2 for the tournament after shooting even par on the final day.

"Today was a day to step up. Luke was spectacular for 14 holes but then lost a little focus, but he is far and away our best player right now," Burke said. "Tyler was terrific all week and let his emotions get the best of him in a swing that cost him two shots."

Sophomore Josiah Tong placed 20th overall with a plus-5. URI's final scorer was graduate student Sean Magarian, who was 42nd at plus-11.

"Josiah had a great tournament aside from the two holes. I was especially proud of Sean today," Burke said. "He was two-over after four holes, and I told him to play like we needed his score. He then went one-over for the next 14 holes. When we fell so far behind, he stepped up for sure and went one under for the final seven holes.

"This was a low point for the year. But we have terrific players who can right the ship. It now becomes about heart and toughness."

Rhode Island will head to the Drexel Match Play Invitational April 7. Last Spring, the Rams placed second in the eight-team field.
