ORLANDO, Fla. – Four of Rhode island's five players were over par as the Rams slipped in the team standings on the second day of the 2025 Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship.
After a strong first round Tuesday that saw the Rams finish the day one stroke off the lead, Rhode Island shot a plus-5 293 Wednesday. That score caused URI to fall to fourth in the team standings. Richmond stormed through its round with a minus-11 to surge to the top of the team standings at minus-10. The Spiders are five strokes ahead of second-place Davidson. Dayton (minus-3) is in third place with one round to go.
"This was clearly not what we wanted today," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "The guys have worked so hard that it was difficult to see their work not be rewarded."
Sophomore
Josiah Tong led the Rhode Island contingent on Day Two, shooting even par. He had a strong round through 14 holes, thanks to six birdies. However, he was 5-over from holes 15-18, carding three bogeys and a double bogey to struggle late.
Graduate transfer
Sean Magarian was solid again. He shot 1-over par after going 1-under on Day One. He sits in a four-way tie for 10th place on the individual leaderboard.
"Sean continued to play well and it is a pleasure to see him leading the team," Burke said. "Josiah was absolutely brilliant for 14 holes and no one in the field played better than him. Unfortunately the wheels came off bit this was an education for him."
Freshman
Tyler Bruneau is one spot behind Magarian, alone in 15th place. He was 1-over par for the round and is the only player in the field to be even par overall. Fellow freshman
Luke Stennett was plus-4 on the day, with double bogeys on holes seven and 15 marring an otherwise steady day. Stennett had two birdies, two bogeys and made par on 12 holes.
Junior
Aidan O'Donovan improved his round by one stroke, shooting 3-over on Wednesday after carding a 4-over on Tuesday. He heads into the final round tied for 33rd overall.
"Aidan has not played to his potential for sure, but he has showed resilience after bad shots or bad holes," Burke said. "Luke and Tyler have struggled although they've both hit the ball well. I refuse to believe the moment is too big for either of them. The hope is they learn from all this. Tyler is still in a position where a great round could challenge some of the leaders. Luke has to block out everything around him and have a more positive attitude when things don't match his expectations. Still not sure anyone here is better than him.
"Tomorrow becomes a look inside. I think we have guys who will step up."
Rhode Island will play in groups with VCU and Loyola Chicago on the final day. The first group will tee off at 7:30 a.m.
