MARICOPA, Ariz. - Freshman
Luke Stennett moved 22 spots up the individual leader board, and junior
Aidan O'Donovan moved up 15 spots to highlight a big move by Rhode Island on the second day of the Golfweek National Golf Invitational.
The Rams shot 7-under as a team Saturday to move up to fifth place in the team standings. Only Oregon State (minus-9) and Ohio State (minus-8) had lower team scores in the second round. Ohio State moved ahead of Utah State by one stroke at minus-18 in the team standings. West Virginia (minus-8), Oregon State (minus-7) and Rhode Island (minus-5) round out the top five.
"This was a solid day for us. It could have gone very poorly for us. After six holes we were in last place and, aside from Aidan, playing very indifferent golf," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "But that all changed when we went into attack mode.
"Before the round I told Aidan to play like a tough Boston street kid, and he did just that. Luke was struggling before he turned on the jets and just tore apart the final holes.
Josiah Tong was steady throughout and continues to be one of the best players here."Â
Stennett was six-under par for the round, including five-under par on the back nine alone. He was the biggest individual mover on the day, jumping from 42nd to a tie for 20th overall.
O'Donovan was rock steady, shooting a three-under par 69 Saturday. He had four birdies and just one bogey in the round. He moved from 46th to 31st.
Sophomore Josiah Tong continues to lead Rhode Island. He shot plus-one, sinking five birdies but also carding six bogeys. He slipped two spots from eighth to ninth place.
Graduate student
Sean Magarian remained in 17 th place overall after his even-par round. Freshman
Tyler Bruneau was plus-two for the day, shooting his second straight 74 and finishing the day tied for 35th overall. Â
"Tomorrow is about toughness once again," Burke said. "It doesn't matter where we are in the standings or what we need to move up. It is 100 percent digging down and showing who we are. This one is personal to every man on the team."
