RAMS ON TOP

  • Rhode Island won its eighth regular season title on Friday afternoon, dominating Saint Joseph's 16-4 on the Hawks' home field in Philadelphia.
  • It was the Rams' first crown since the 2021 campaign when the team won the Atlantic 10 North Division.
  • In the same weekend, Rhode Island's rowing team won its 11th Atlantic 10 Championship on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
  • URI's Department of Athletics now has four championship titles during the 2024-25 academic year, as the baseball and rowing teams are joined by football (CAA Football Champions) and men's track & field (Indoor Atlantic 10 Champions) in achieving the feat.
  • Rhody also won the baseball regular season crown in 2003 (East Division), 2004 (East Division), 2005 (East Division), 2006, 2013 (shared title) and 2016.
  • In both 2005 and 2016, the Rams went on to win the Atlantic 10 Championship, earning the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament.
  • The '05 team played in the Long Beach State Regional, while the 2016 squad battled in the South Carolina Regional.
  • With the championship comes the top seed for the Atlantic 10 Tournament, which additionally awards a bye into the second round of action.

RHODE ISLAND AT THE ATLANTIC 10 CHAMPIONSHIP

  • Just one year after missing the Atlantic 10 Tournament, Rhode Island returns as the top seed and will face the winner of Tuesday's game between No. 4 Davidson and No. 5 Saint Joseph's at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21.
  • Prior to its shortened 2024 season, Rhody had made four consecutive postseason appearances between 2019-23. The 2020 Tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • URI enters play at Capital One Park with a 25-30 record in the A-10 Tournament.
  • Rhody has not won a playoff game since an 8-2 victory over Dayton on May 27, 2021.
  • A victory on Wednesday morning would snap a six-game losing streak for the Rams in postseason play.
  • The last time Rhode Island won more than two games at the A-10 Tournament was back in 2016 when the team won all three of its contests to claim the championship title.
  • Of this year's seven-team field, Rhode Island has played all but the No. 4 Davidson Wildcats.
  • URI dropped two out of three games in a trip to No. 2 George Mason back on April 25-27, preventing a Patriot sweep with a 15-9 victory in the series finale.
  • No. 3 Saint Louis made the trip to Kingston for the Rams' penultimate regular season series and lost all three games to Rhody's red-hot ballclub. Over the course of the weekend, URI outscored the Billikens 17-7.
  • Fifth-seeded Saint Joseph's would be a familiar opponent for Rhody, as the team closed out the regular season against them just last weekend. Rhode Island pummeled the Hawks 11-4 and 16-4 in the first two games before falling 18-16 in a four-and-a-half hour finale.
  • The Rams swept No. 6 Fordham the weekend before achieving the feat against Saint Louis. It was Rhody's second sweep of a conference opponent on the road, having done so against VCU back in week one of A-10 action.
  • No. 7 Dayton also lost all three games to URI at Bill Beck Field, suffering a 28-9 disadvantage in scoring.
  • Rhode Island has not played the fourth-seeded Wildcats since last season. The Rams made the trip to Davidson, winning two out of three games.
