How it Happened
Rhode Island could not solve Richmond's Chase Topolski as it fell 6-1 to the Spiders in the opener of a three-game series Friday afternoon.
Topolski (1-2) hurled 6.0 shutout innings while scattering five hits and two walks. The Rams had their chances against the Richmond starter, but Rhody left eight runners on base, going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
Richmond's offense steadily built a lead, scoring single runs in the first and third innings. A two-run home run by Sean Scanlon in the fifth broke the game open. The Spiders padded the lead with two more in the sixth to coast to the win. Scanlon drove in four of Richmond's six runs.
Rhode Island managed to load the bases in the top of the ninth. Walks to Ryan Thomson and
Scott Penney were sandwiched around
Adonis Medina getting hit by a pitch. The Rams finally got on the board when
Reece Moroney lined a two-out single to bring Thompson in with URI's lone run of the game. One batter later, a flyout ended the game.
