Rams Ready for A-10 Championship

RHODE ISLAND AT THE ATLANTIC 10 CHAMPIONSHIP
  • Rhode Island is 28-30 in games played at the Atlantic 10 Championship. 
  • The Rams first appearance in the A-10 Championship field was in 1984. Rhode Island beat both West Virginia and Penn State before falling twice to Temple in consecutive games to end its season.
  • Rhode Island's most recent trip to the league's postseason tournament was last year in 2025. Rhode Island won the A-10 regular season and postseason crowns last year. 
  • The No. 1 overall seed, Rhode Island beat No. 4 Davidson in the quarterfinals, No. 3 Saint Louis in the semifinals, and No. 2 George Mason in the finals. 
  • Prior to its three-game sweep in last year's A-10 Championship, Rhode Island had not won a game in the postseason since 2021.
  • With win over No. 2 George Mason a season ago, the Rams clinched the A-10's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. 
  • The Rams earned the No. 3 seed in the Baton Rouge Regional at LSU in the NCAA Tournament. 
  • Rhode Island fell to Dallas Baptist and Little Rock in the NCAAs.
  • The Rams No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament was the highest in program history.

RHODE ISLAND VS. GEORGE MASON - SERIES NOTES

  • Rhode Island will begin the 2026 Atlantic 10 Championship with a meeting against No. 4 George Mason The winner will face No. 1 Saint Joseph's on Thursday, May 21 at 11 a.m.
  • Rhode Island is 11-18 all time against George Mason.
  • The first meeting between the Rams and Patriots was in 1977 and the most recent meeting is on Sunday, March 22 in Kingston. 
  • During that game, Rhode Island pulled off one of the most improbable comebacks in program history as Nicholas Toro launched a three-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth for a 10-9 win over George Mason
  • The improbable win gave Rhode Island its first Atlantic 10 series win of the season.
  • Trailing 9-3 with two outs and nobody on base, things looked as bleak for the Rams. Ryan Henchel doubled to get things started. 
  • Aidan Botti doubled to put two runners in scoring position before Reece Moroney lined a single off the pitcher's back for an infield hit that brought Penney in and put runners on the corners.
  • Down 9-5, Jack Hopko drew a walk to load the bases. Ryan King followed with a walk of his own that forced Botti in to pull the Rams within three runs. Moroney came in on a wild pitch to make the score 9-7. 
  • Then, on a 3-2 pitch, Toro muscled a ball to deep left field for his first home run of the season, setting off a wild celebration for the Rams.
  • Jake Cullen kept URI in the game, allowing just one unearned run over 4.1 innings of quality relief. He struck out four batters while giving up one hit and one walk.
  • Tommy Turner provided 2.0 scoreless inning of work with one strikeout.
  • Luc Lavigeur picked up his first win of the season with a scoreless inning of work.
  • Since the comeback win, Rhode Island has won six of its last nine games including a weekend sweep of VCU.
  • The Rams and Patriots also met in last year's A-10 Championship game at Capital One Park in Tysons, Va.
