KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island opens its Fall season at the Doc Gimmler early Saturday morning.
Hosted by St. John's on Bethpage State Park's Red Course, the Doc Gimmler is a 54-hole tournament. The 14-team field will play two rounds on Saturday and a final round on Sunday.
"We are thrilled to be returning to the Gimmler and Bethpage Red," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "It is and incredible golf course and a place we've won twice in upsets."
The Rams are playing the Gimmler for the first time since September of 2019, when they placed fourth out of 14 teams. That year, freshman Bryson Richards earned co-medalist honors in just his second career tournament. Rhody won the team title in the Fall of 2018.
This year's field includes Boston College, Bryant, Columbia, Hofstra, Iona, Lafayette, Lehigh, LIU, Providence, Rhode Island, Towson, UConn, Yale and host St. John's.
Rhode Island will be playing with Yale and Boston College in the opening round. The first group will tee off at 7:30 a.m.
Representing URI will be
Tony Liu,
Josiah Tong,
Jack Quinn,
Bennett Masterson and
Seb Carlsson.
Owen Rooney will be in the field as an individual.
"
Josiah Tong and
Jack Quinn had great summers of tournament golf and are clearly ready for battle," Burke said. "
Tony Liu looks like the Tony of a couple years ago. He fired an impressive six-under in the final round of qualifying so we're hoping this is a very special year for us.
"I'm excited to see how Bennett, Seb, and Owen play. They have not been regulars in the lineup, but they will be this year."
