FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Rhode Island's
Lotte Black finished seventh in her preliminary heat and 14th in the nation in the 1 Mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships Friday night.
Competing at the Randal Tyson Center on the University of Arkansas campus, Black posted a time of 4:42.92. She did not qualify for Saturday's final in the event, as the top four finishers plus the next two fastest finishers make up the final 10 competitors in the event.
The start of Friday's heat saw significant bumping and contact at the start of the race as runners jostled for position. Black worked her way to the outside and moved up to fifth place. However, the BYU duo of Heather Hanson and Kate Hunter ran side by side and prevented Black from getting around and working to the front of the pack.
Arkansas' Krissy Gear won the heat in a time of 4:40.92, followed by Washington's Katie Rainsberger (4:41.61), Hanson (4:41.74) and Hunter (4:41.78).
The second preliminary heat was the faster of the two, and the remaining six spots for Saturday's final.
This was the second straight year Black qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship. She also qualified last season but did not get to compete because the event was canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Black was one of 16 women to qualify for the NCAA Championship in the 1 Mile. She ran in the first of two heats for the 1 Mile prelims Friday night. The top four finishers in each heat plus the next two best times advanced to Saturday's final.
While Black did not qualify for the finals, she is not done competing. The two-time defending Atlantic 10 Cross Country champion will make the drive to Stillwater, Oklahoma to compete in the 2021 NCAA Women's Division I Cross Country Championship. Hosted by Oklahoma State University on Monday, March 15, the race will air live on ESPNU. Coverage begins at 12:30 p.m. EST.
