BOSTON, Mass. - Sophomore
Ella Arbeiter recorded her fastest time of the season in the 500-yard freestyle at the Boston Winter Open to lead a small contingent of Rhode Island swimmers at the meet Friday night.
On the first night of the Winter Open - hosted by Boston University - Arbeiter posted a time of 5:04.81. The time was good for third place out of 14 entrants in the event. Arbeiter's time was more than 16 seconds faster than her previous season best.
Brown's Amelia Hines won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:59.85, followed by Yale's Lauren Putnam (5:00.73). Arbeiter was third, nearly a full second ahead of Northeastern's Eliana Auerbach (5:05.51).
Rhode Island had three other swimmers in the event.
Lauren Biglow and
Meghan Pauley placed ninth and 10th, respectively. Biglow finished in 5:16.71, just .04 of a second ahead of Pauley.
Cate Carboni was 11th in the event with a time of 5:17.25.
Rhody also had
Chloe Robinson compete in the 50-yard freestyle. She placed 12th out of 40 entrants with her time of 24.78 seconds. Columbia's Sophie Kloppennburg won the event with a time of 23.80, edging Harvard's Davina Huang (23.82).
Rhode Island will have competitors in five events at the Winter Open on Saturday. Pauley and Arbeiter will be in the 200- and 1650-yard freestyle events. Carboni will join them in the 1650. Robinson will race in the 100-yard freestyle, while Biglow will be in the 200-yard backstroke. Both Robinson and Biglow will compete in the 100-yard backstroke.
