How It Happened
Rhode Island's depth flexed its muscle in its season opener, as the Rams won 11 of 16 events while sweeping Siena (203-94) and Stonehill (225-68) Saturday afternoon.
Rhody took three of the top four spots in seven of the events, including 1-2-3 sweeps in the 1- and 3-meter dives, as well as the 400-yard individual medley.
Molly Beckwith,
Julianna Tyler and
Olivia Winslow each won two individual events as URI cruised to a pair of wins.
Winslow won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events. In the 1-meter event, she won with a score of 282.75.
Emily Whiteneck (244.73) and
Kelsey Kreuscher (226.80) were second and third, respectively. The same trio swept the 3-meter event. Winslow won with a score of 274.05 and time Kreuscher took second (271.80) and Whiteneck third (256.95).
Tyler led a sweep of the 400-yard individual medley. Her time of 4:39.28 was ahead of
Lily Gugino (4:42.71), who edged third-place finisher
Emma Raser (4:43.27).
Tyler also won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:09.76.
Mary McCormick (2:11.18) placed second, while Emma Burtotto (2:15.21) was fourth.
Beckwith, making her collegiate debut, won both the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly races. She took the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:54.58, edging teammate
Rylee Kelly (1:55.98).
Zara Beaumont was fourth in the race with a time of 1:59.09.
Beckwith and
Lily Mair gave Rhody a 1-2 finish in the 100 butterfly. Beckwith won in 58:30, while Mair finished in 1:00.26.
Standouts from the Pool
- Cate Carboni beat the field in the 1000-yard freestyle by nearly six seconds, winning in a time of 11:04.94. Meghan Pauley was third with a time of 11:18.95.
- Emma Raser won the 200-yard backstroke with her time of 2:11.14. Lauren Biglow (2:11.72) added a third-place finish.
- 200-yard breaststroke
- Maddy Deeney won the 200-yard breaststroke with her time of 2:28.99, edging teammate Lily Gugino (2:29.49).
- Mary McCormick was victorious in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:16.20. Rhody also took second and fourth place, as Zara Beaumont finished in 5:20.38 and Ella Arbeiter touched the wall in 5:20.96.
- In the final event of the day, Rhode Island took first, third and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Avery Potyrala, Rylee Kelly, Chloe Robinson and Emma Raser won in 1:39.39. Molly Beckwith, Lily Mair, Maddy Deeney and Emma Bertotto placed third (1:40.45), while Carolyn Wanosik, Mary McCormick, Ella Arbeiter and Abby Zadorozny were fourth (1:42.54).
