PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A late surge propelled Rhode Island to a come-from-behind victory over in-state rival Providence Wednesday evening. The Rams (3-2) won the meet, 150-131.
Providence was leading the meet 117-89 through the first 11 events of the night. The Friars won eight of the first 11 events, though Rhody's depth kept the score close.
Starting with the 50-meter butterfly, it was all Rhode Island.
Molly Beckwith,
Lily Mair and
Mary McCormick provided a 1-2-3 sweep for URI, which outscored PC 16-3. It was the same in the 3-meter dive, where
Olivia Winslow,
Kelsey Kreuscher and
Emily Whiteneck took the top three spots as Rhody once again outscored Providence 16-3 in the event.
Those two events closed the deficit to two points, with Providence clinging to a 123-121 advantage.
Julianna Tyler and
Lily Gugino gave Rhode Island a 1-2 finish in the 100-meter Individual medley, helping URI take the lead 135-129 heading into the final event of the night.
The team of Beckwith,
Rylee Kelly,
Chloe Robinson and
Emma Bertotto won the 400-meter freestyle relay, while URI's team of
Avery Potyrala, Mair,
Abby Zadorozny and
Emma Raser took second place, clinching the team win in the process.
Standouts from the Pool
- Molly Beckwith continued her impressive debut season, winning the 50-meter butterfly and the 100-meter butterfly, while also being part of the winning 400-meter freestyle relay.
- She was also on the second-place 400-meter relay team.
- Rylee Kelly won the 100-meter freestyle and was second in the 200-meter freestyle.
- Olivia Winslow once again swept the diving events, her third time doing so. She won the 1-meter dive with a score of 263.70 and the 3-meter dive with a score of 302.33
- The 3-meter score was a season best for Winslow.
