Email: mballweg@uri.eduMike Ballweg, assistant athletic director, is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Rhode Island Athletic Media Relations Office. A native of Blacksburg, Va., Ballweg is a 1975 graduate of Virginia Tech where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration.
He worked in the Virginia Tech sports information office as an undergraduate under Mr. Wendy Weisend, a member of the College Sports Information Directors Hall of Fame. He was the sports information director at Hampton (1975-80), director of sports media relations at Ohio (1980-82) and sports information director at West Virginia (1982-84) before moving to Virginia Commonwealth (1984-92) as the sports information director. He spent two years as the assistant executive director of the Blockbuster Bowl in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. before coming to Rhode Island in 1994.
Ballweg has served as national chair of CoSIDA's publications committee and has earned 28 Citations for Excellence for Rhode Island's athletic brochures.
He is responsible for overseeing media relations for Rhode Island's 22 intercollegaite sports, 450 student-athletes, coaches and administrators with emphasis on football and men's basketball.
Ballweg is married to the former Shari Sheehan. A native of Sarasota, Fla., she is an assistant vice-president at Citizens Bank in Warwick, R.I. The couple resides in Carolina, R.I.
