A two-year team captain for Rhode Island, Hemenway was an NCAA Regional Zone qualifier in 1988 and 1989. He also qualified for the Eastern Seaboards in 1988 and 1989. A four-year letter winner for the Rams, Hemenway and teammate Dave Dean placed first and second in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives at every dual meet they competed in during Hemenway's junior and senior seasons. Hemenway graduated as the program record holder in the 1-meter (6 dives), 1-meter (11 dives) and the 3-meter (11 dives). He had top four finishes at the New England Championship all four years of his career, including second-place finishes in both the 1-meter and 3-meter in 1989. Following his career at Rhode Island, Hemenway was a professional diver for two years with the Millbrook Diving Association at Six Flaggs in New Jersey and Massachusetts.
