CALVIN WHITFIELD '83 zig-zagged through his Ram football career, from offense to defense to offense to defense, becoming a star in the process. Starting out in 1979 as a little-used 5'9" tailback, he moved to cornerback the following year and emerged as a standout who earned honorable mention All-Conference honors in 1980 and was named to the first team a year later. When the Rams needed a tailback in 1982, Whitfield set a school record by carrying the ball 283 times, rushing for 1,200 yards--a mark that held for 16 years--and 1,657 all-purpose yards, another record at the time. After graduation, he went back to defense, playing professionally at cornerback for the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL in 1983 and a year later for the NFL's Buffalo Bills. He's worked as dean of special education at Jamaica (N.Y.) High and as an assistant football coach at nearby Augustus Martin High.
