ALBERT L. "AL" SKINNER, Honorary Class '92, is the third-winningest basketball coach in Rhode Island history with 138 wins. He starred as a player at the University of Massachusetts and played in both the ABA and NBA. He began his coaching career as an assistant to URI Director of Athletics Ron Petro at Marist College. In 1984 he was named an assistant at URI and four years later was named head coach of the Rams. His 1991-92 team was 22-10 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NIT; the following year, URI was 19-11, earning an NCAA berth. In 1995-96 the Rams advanced to the NIT's Elite 8 and a year later were 20-10 with an NCAA Tournament bid. Skinner recruited the Ram team that went to the NCAA's Elite 8 in 1997-98. He accepted the head coaching position at Boston College in 1996 but remained a close friend of the URI program.
