CHARLES E. GIBBONS '56 was a football Little All-America guard in the mid-1950s who later played professionally with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League and with the Providence Steamroller. Winner of five letters at URI in football and track, he was named the most distinguished senior athlete in 1956 as the recipient of the prestigious LeBoeuf Award. He was also a highly successful teacher-coach at Rogers High in Newport, and is a member of the Providence Gridiron and Newport Halls of Fame.
