DR. GRETA COHEN was a professor of Physical Education & Exercise Science and Women's Studies at Rhode Island for 36 years. From 1966-1974 she was head coach of the women's fencing team, leading the team to national ranking and becoming the first women's team at URI to earn such a distinction. The Rams were ranked 16th in the nation in 1972-73 and 19th in 1973-74. During her tenure as coach the team won 14 individual championships in the novice division, eight in the intermediate division and four in advanced division. Cohen led the team to five New England Championship titles and three runner-up finishes in both the intermediate and advanced divisions. Cohen's publications include the first comprehensive textbook for women's sports. The text, titled Women in Sports: Issues and Controversies, is now in its second edition and the publisher's best seller. She was the editor of the Monograph Series for the Institute for International Sport. At the time of her retirement in 2002, Cohen was a sport sociologist, director of graduate studies, lecturer, and a political activist. Her honors include induction into the New Agenda Women's Hall of Fame, a Lifetime Achievement Award from alma mater Boston University, and the Woman of the Year Award by the URI Association of Professional & Academic Women. She graduated from Sargent College of Boston University in 1964 and earned a Master's Degree from Temple and her Doctorate Degree from Boston University.
