THOMAS R. DOHERTY, Honorary Class '70, was for 27 years (1943-70) sports information director at R.I. State and URI. His journalistic career spanned 29 years with both the Providence Journal-Bulletin and the Worcester Telegram & Gazette as well as the University. A member of the National Helms Hall of Fame, the first to be so honored from New England, he was also President of Words Unlimited for 13 years and Yankee Conference Sports Information Director for 10 years. Many Rhode Island athletes gained honors through his efforts, and he was able to draw on personal contacts with friends throughout the nation. He was First Exalted Ruler, South Kingstown Lodge, B.P.O Elks, District Deputy, and past president of South Kingstown Town Council and Narragansett Chamber of Commerce. Doherty was also Chairman of the South Kingstown School Committee.
