JOHN E. "JACK" MEADE '15, the man for whom Meade Stadium is named, held the State's number one certificate as a registered professional engineer. A once-powerful figure in the Rhode Island General Assembly, he was longtime deputy director of public works and city engineer of Providence. He was honored in 1938 with a life award by the University of Rhode Island Alumni Association, and was an alumni member of the then Board of Regents of R.I. State College of Education, serving for four years. He was one of URI's staunchest supporters of athletics over the years.
