BRUCE J. HALLWORTH '66 was a standout baseball player at Rhode Island in the 1960s and holds the distinction of hitting the first varsity homer ever at Bill Beck Field. The versatile Hallworth started his career as a catcher but later played first base and earned 1966 All-Conference honors at the latter position. Captain of his team, he led the club in home runs. One of his career highlights was a 17-game hitting streak. Follow his collegiate playing days, he was offered contracts by Minnesota, Boston, the New York Mets and St. Louis. He was active in civic affairs as a trustee of the URI Foundation and was involved with numerous other local organizations. He earned an M.B.A. in finance from URI and retired as senior vice president for commercial lending at Citizens Bank.
