JOHN P. MITCHELL '51, brother of the former U.S. Senator from Maine, George Mitchell, was a two-time All-Yankee Conference pick and honorable mention All-America guard for Rhode Island as a junior in 1949-50. Mitchell, a member of the State of Maine's Hall of Fame, was one of the top defensive players in the nation for the Rams. On February 17, 1950, in a game still talked about, he held the great Bob Cousy of Holy Cross in check in a game the Rams eventually lost in overtime (70-62).
