JACKIE ELMER-FAGAN (79) was the first woman to receive a full athletic scholarship to the University of Rhode Island in 1975. She went on to become one of the best volleyball players in school history, leading the Rams to the AIAW National Championships in Provo, Utah in 1977, along with to a runner-up finish in New England in 1978. Elmer-Fagan, who was the team captain as a senior in 1978, helped the Rams to a 100-24 record and .806 winning percentage during her four-year career in Kingston. She went on to play for the U.S. East Olympic Team in the summer of 1976 and played professionally in the Italian Professional Volleyball League and with AVP Beach Volleyball Tour. She also played in the American National Volleyball Association and was a first-team All-American for the United States Volleyball Association in 1995. Elmer-Fagan was the head volleyball coach at Bryant in 1981, Rhode Island College in 1982 and Middletown High in 1997. She is a chemistry teacher at South Kingstown High, where she also helps is as a volunteer assistant coach for the girl's volleyball team. She lives in Wakefield, R.I. with her husband Christopher and their two children, Kirstin and Conor.
