ERNEST A. "ERNIE" CALVERLEY '46 was a basketball All-American at Rhode Island State College under the legendary Frank Keaney, a professional basketball player for the Providence Steamroller, and head coach of basketball at URI from 1957-68, compiling a record second only to his former coach. He was Rhode Island Coach of the Year in 1962, and a member of the State of Rhode Island Heritage, New England Basketball, and Providence Gridiron Club Halls of Fame. An All-New England and All-State schoolboy basketball player from Pawtucket, R.I, he was also Assistant Director of Athletics at URI. Named "all" team in every tournament in which he participated, he fired the "shot heard 'round the world" which beat Bowling Green in the 1946 National Invitation Tournament at Madison Square Garden. He was named to the All-NIT team and earned Most Valuable Player honors. Upon graduation, he was the leading career scorer in Ram hoop history.
