ROBERT S. GRIFFIN, who spent 17 years as Rhode Island's twelfth head football coach from 1976-92, has more wins (79) than any other URI gridiron coach. He is also in a select group of 1AA football coaches with 100 wins overall, reaching that milestone in 21 seasons. He coached some of Rhode Island's top teams, winning the Yankee Conference championship in 1984 and 1985 and sharing the title in 1981. All three of those teams qualified for the NCAA playoffs. He was the New England, Yankee Conference and Words Unlimited Coach of the Year in both 1984 and 1985, posting back-to-back 10-3-seasons. In 1985 he was the District I Kodak, New England Football Writers and Greater Boston Gridiron Club Coach of the Year. Griffin is a member of the Providence Gridiron Club Hall of Fame.
