ROBERT E. WELLS '59 won 16 Coach of the Year awards in baseball, took his teams to the postseason 17 times in 29 years, and won seven straight conference titles. A highly successful coach at Frostburg State (602-327-5), perhaps his greatest achievement grew out of a single spontaneous act in 1969. His team had just swept a doubleheader at Bridgewater College and in tribute to his foes' grit and hustle, he asked his players to shake their hands. His impulse grew into a tradition still practiced today throughout amateur baseball. Wells started at second base for three years at Rhode Island, from 1957-59, and led the Rams in stolen bases each season. His later success at Frostburg State (1965-91 and 1996-97) landed him in the school's Bobcat Hall of Fame, the City of Frostburg Hall of Fame, and the Maryland State Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame.
