JOHN B. GONSALVES '64, an unheralded athlete when he arrived at Rhode Island, didn't take long to rise to the top. As a sophomore walk-on in 1962, he finished second in the pole vault at the Yankee Conference championships. After sitting out his junior year with a dislocated foot, he came back and won both the Yankee Conference and New England titles as a senior in 1964. Gonsalves competed nationally as one of the top pole vaulters in the college ranks and also ran on Rhode Island's outstanding mile-relay team. He was active in extra-curricular activities, serving as president of both his senior class and the Blue Key Society. He was also sergeant-at-arms of the Student Senate and vice president of Phi Mu Delta Fraternity.
