JAMES S. BUEHLER '78 launched a distinguished soccer career as a defenseman for Rhode Island from 1973-77, earning a spot on the varsity as a freshman and going on to lead the defense a year later. Following his sophomore year, he battled pneumonia and severe respiratory problems before having part of his right lung removed. Determined not to let injuries sideline him, Buehler returned for his junior season to again lead the defense. As a senior Buehler was elected team captain and led the Rams to an NCAA playoff berth, gaining first-team All-Yankee Conference honors. Following his URI career, he was drafted by the New York Apollos of the ASL and later continued his career as a player, coach, and then president of the Union County Sport Club. He also founded and served as vice president of the North Jersey Imperials professional soccer team of the USISL.
