WILLIAM M. BAIRD '54, former Director of Athletics and coach of basketball at Rhode Island College, starred in basketball at URI in the early 1950s, finishing with 1,535 points, which placed him eleventh on the all-time scoring list at Kingston at the time of his induction. He was basketball captain and twice an All-Conference player. He was an assistant coach at URI before becoming an outstanding coach at RIC, winning Coach of the Year honors in 1968-69 from Words Unlimited and United Press International for New England. He was later Director of Athletics at Roger Williams University.
