DR. AMERICO A. "SAVY" SAVASTANO, MD '28, one of the world's most outstanding orthopedic surgeons, was a longtime orthopedic consultant to the University of Rhode Island. He was a member of the Board of Regents for Education in Rhode Island, a member of the Rhode Island Heritage and Providence Gridiron Club Halls of Fame, and a member of President's Council on Physical Fitness. He was Surgeon-in-Chief, Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Fractures, at Rhode Island Hospital, and U.S Team Physician for the 1967 Pan American Games. Dr. Savastano was cited for leadership in sports medicine by the American College of Sports Medicine in 1968 and was the primary consultant for URI's Medical Aspects in Sports Conferences. One of the University's most distinguished graduates, he was awarded a Doctor of Science Honorary Degree in 1959.
