AMBROSE R. "AMBY" SMITH, Honorary Class '83, was sports editor of the Pawtuxet Valley Daily Times and vice president and general manager of that newspaper. Referred to as "Mr. Media" in Rhode Island, he supported URI athletics throughout his life with both the spoken and the written word. Smith was Secretary-Treasurer and President of Words Unlimited for more than 50 years, President of the Providence Gridiron Club, and Treasurer of the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame. He has won numerous honors and awards throughout a distinguished journalistic career and is a member of the State of Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame, the Providence Gridiron Club Hall of Fame, and the New England Basketball Hall of Fame.
