Stanley Wright ('78)
Basketball

A two-year captain, Wright led the reemergence of Rhode Island basketball in the late 1970s, helping the Rams go from five wins in 1974-75 to 24 wins and an NCAA Championship appearance in 1977-78. Making their first NCAA appearance since 1966, Wright and Rhode Island dropped a 63-62 heartbreaker to Duke in the opening round. Rhody ended the season ranked No. 19 in the country. At the time of his graduation, Wright was ranked ninth in program history in scoring with 1,346 points, which still is 24th all time. He is one of five Rhode Island players to finish his career with at least 1,300 points and 300 assists, joining Carlton Owens, Tyson Wheeler, Tom Garrick and Jiggy Williamson. A complete player, Wright also ended his career with more than 600 rebounds. During his career, he earned All-New England honors twice, All-District honors once and was a First Team All-Yankee Conference.
