STEPHEN L. PETERSON '85, a member of Rhode Island's crew teams of the 1980s, was on the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team and was the 1990 world champion. He was a member of the U.S. National Team from1989-92 and 1995-96, earning the Vesper Cup Award in 1990. President of the URI crew club as a junior and senior, he was a two-time Dad Vail collegiate national champion, winning the 1982men's freshman lightweight eight and the 1984 men's varsity lightweight eight events. Peterson served as crew coach at Rhode Island from 1989-91 until moving on to George Washington, where he was Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year in 2000. He was also an assistant coach of the U.S. lightweight women's national team.
