FREDERICK D. TOOTELL was for 39 years (1925-64) coach, teacher, and athletic director at the University of Rhode Island. He was head coach of track and cross-country for 32 years, compiling an unprecedented record of 18 undefeated seasons in cross-country, including a national championship, and 17 undefeated seasons in track. He is a member of the National Helms and State of Rhode Island Heritage Halls of Fame. He was also assistant freshman football coach for 22 years, tennis coach for six years, professor of physical education for men for 29 years, and Director of Athletics and Chairman of the Department of Physical Education for men for nine years. Tootell was an Olympic champion in the hammer throw in 1924 and holds All-Intercollegiate hammer throw records at Bowdoin College. He was named an All-Time, All-State tackle in the state of Maine.
